Year 12 Product Design Curriculum

Autumn: Portfolio Projects, CAD/CAM Project and Technical Principles - Theory
  • Students will produce a portfolio by working through a variety of small design and make projects
  • The portfolio will develop the skills that students need to produce their final NEA project in Year 13, as well as providing them with a body of work for University, Job, and Apprenticeship interviews. Projects including Smartemp (laser cut acrylic thermometer with thermochromic strip), Alessi Egg Cup (CAD/CAM project), Decorative Jewellery (laminated wood), PolyPro Lamp (lighting using polypropylene and other materials)
  • Each project will be assessed on completion against a mini version of the NEA assessment criteria to allow students to become familiar with the criteria and its application
  • Student will complete a number of theory-based activities including note taking, extended research, case studies, and practice examination questions on Technical Principles
  • The topics include all material categories their properties and uses, all material joining and processing methods, enhancement of materials and material finishes, scales of production, the use of computer systems, digital design and manufacture, product development and improvement, Health and Safety in the workplace, consumer safety, intellectual property rights, manufacture for maintenance and repair, product disassembly, feasibility studies, and enterprise and marketing
  • Assessment takes place throughout in the form of examination style questions and through discussion

  • Non-examination Assessment Preparation
  • Students will be given an introduction of the rules and regulations for the NEA project
  • They will use a variety of resources to create their own NEA guide to work from throughout the NEA project
  • They will begin preliminary research into their project context and create their own plan for tackling the project on their return to Year 13

Year 13 Product Design Curriculum

Autumn
  • The Non-Examination Assessment is also known as the coursework project. It is the application of Technical principles and Designing and making principles
  • It consists of a Portfolio of design and research, analysis, development, and evaluation alongside a final 3D prototype
  • Students are expected to work independently to produce 40 A3 pages for their folder, and the project should take around 50 hours. It is marked out of 100 marks, and it is 50% of the final A Level grade
  • Students will be required to choose their own context and they must ensure that it is of an appropriate level of complexity with a certain degree of uncertainty of the outcome so that students can engage in an iterative process of designing, making, testing and evaluating
  • The work is assessed internally at the end of the project and moderated by AQA.
  • Student will complete a number of theory-based activities including note taking, extended research, case studies, and practice examination questions on Designing and Making Principles
  • The topics include iterative design processes in industry, design influences, design styles and movements, designers and their work, socio-economic factors, major developments in technology, social and moral issues, product lifecycles, and responsible design

Summer: Revision
  • Students will review their personalised learning checklist and identify areas to focus their revision on
  • Students will develop examination techniques and develop their application of Mathematics to Design based examination questions
