Reading Realm

Darrick Wood School is committed to providing unique learning opportunities for our students, and we recognise the importance of the school library as a hub for learning.

The Reading Realm

The Reading Realm is our popular school library for quiet reading, doing homework, revising for exams, and making friends. Open from 8am to 4pm, students enjoy visiting the Reading Realm throughout the day. Our librarian Mrs MacBean is always there and happy to help.

Books

With a huge collection of fiction and non-fiction books to choose from, every student will find something for them. Most books can be borrowed for up to 2 weeks at a time and renewed if needed longer.

Sora

We have a large collection of e-books and audiobooks on Sora www.soraapp.com which students can access anywhere, anytime with no worry about misplacing a book or late returns. Students can easily access Sora using their school email and password.

Clubs and Events

There are several clubs and events which take place in the Reading Realm each year. These include:

  • Scholastic Book Fair - Every September and March, where pupils can buy books and stationery and earn rewards for our school
  • World Book Day - Every March with activities taking place throughout the week across the school.
  • Carnegie Shadowing Group - every March to June – a book club where pupils read, discuss and review the books shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal for outstanding fiction for young people, and vote for their favourite to win the Shadowers’ Choice Award
  • Various Book Clubs and Tabletop Games - Throughout the year including Dungeons & Dragons, and chess club
